COLLEGE ESSAY
We will be talking a lot over the course of this unit about perceptions - your own in particular. The personal statement (or college essay), which most colleges require, is your opportunity to share your own perceptions and to consciously and positively shape and influence a college's perception of you. It is the only real opportunity you have to express to admissions officers what cannot be expressed in numbers and letters and lists; it is truly your one chance to distinguish yourself among a sea of well-qualified applicants.
Some of you have worked on college essays in the past and/or are in the midst of actually finishing your essays to apply to schools. If you have already completed and/or submitted an essay for application, I will ask you to choose another topic for exploration and practice of this mode of writing. The same goes for if the colleges you are applying to do not require an essay; choose a topic from the common application for your work on this assignment. For our work in class, you will …

- Craft a personal essay of at least 500 words in length
- Participate actively in writing workshop as we discuss essay drafts
- Revise and submit a second draft of this essay for grading

1) Pre-Writing Due by Wednesday, 09/14/16 : Read How To Write a College Essay by Chris Peterson and review this presentation on College Essay How-tos. I will ask you to share in class what you gathered from these two pieces about your purpose here. Complete College Essay Pre-Writing Document I shared with you in Google Classroom where you research your topic and process what you learn in reading the pieces above.
2) Due by Wednesday, 09/21/16 : Completed Draft due for Writing Workshop in class - printed copy and in Google Drive
3) Due by Friday, 09/23/16 : Draft for Assessment Due in printed form by 3:30! (60 Points -- First Draft)
4) Due by Friday, 10/07/16 : Revised Draft for Assessment Due (50 Points -- Second Draft)

- Copy and Paste your essay draft into a document and call it FINAL DRAFT COLLEGE ESSAY. This document should be saved in your English Folder
- Document should be double spaced, size 10-12 in a clear, readable font
- On the left side of your page - you should have a heading that includes (in this order) :
- Your name
- Teacher's full name
- Class name
- Date in this format - 26 September 2014
- In the header portion of your page should be your last name and the page number. To do this :
- In Google Drive - go to Insert/ Page Number/ Top of page.
- Move your cursor to before the page number and type your last name and one space (i.e. Holliday 1)
- You should have a title for your piece that is centered above where your essay begins. Your title should NOT be bolded, italicized, or underlined.. Your title should not be the name of the assignment but something that indicates what your essay is about.
- Under your title in your essay, take some time today to write an Author's Note to include with your essay. An Author's Note is a space for you to reflect briefly on your process and product. What are you proud of in this piece? What help did you receive in putting this together that most guided you in the process?
- Your Author's Note should be italicized between your title and the start of your essay.
